OBITUARY.

MR J. W. TODD. The death has occurred In Hamilton of Mr John Wylie Todd, aged 78. Mr Todd, who was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, came to New Zealand as a young man, being engaged in farming during the active part of his life. He was married to Miss Cecelia Haylock at Oamaru. He served with the 15thdetachment of the New Zealand Forces during the Great War. Mr Todd is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs Robieson, of Auckland. MR WILLIAM McNICKLE.

The death has occurred of Mr William McNickle (68), secretary of the Superannuated Public Servants’ Association, and formerly editor of the Katipo. He was a native of Laurence (Otago), he joined the Post and Telegraph Department in 1885 and was stationed at various places in the North and South Islands, retiring on superannuation in 1926. Since his retirement he has interested himself in municipal and educational matters, being secretary of the Mount Eden Ratepayers’ Association and an active member of the Workers’ Educational Institute. Sir Philip Ben Greet was born in September, 1856, and at an early .age took up a stage career. In 1914 he started with great enthusiasm the work of making Shakespeare popular. In co-operation with Miss Lilian Baylis, manager of the “Old Vic,” the people’s theatre in South London, he put on a series of Shakespeare's plays which attracted great attention, in February, 1929, Sir Philip’s jubilee in the theatre was marked by a dinner given in his honour. At that time he was still acting and also conducting a training school for actors and givln ,r Shakespearean readings at schools’. Sir Philip was knighted in 1929. ARCHDEACON HINDLEY. .
