MATANGI NEWS.

FAREWELL AFTERNOON. A complimentary afternoon was tendered the wives of the staff of the Glaxo factory by the settlers’ wives of the district in the Matangi Hall on Friday afternoon. The hall was artistically decorated with chrysanthemums and hydrangeas. Mrs J. Ranstead presided and Mrs Whewell in a short address welcomed all the guests. Apologies were received from Mrs Dunford and Mrs Judd. Songs by Miss Elsie Shaw were very much enjoyed. Two competitions which caused much amusement were won by Mrs Martini and Miss Melva Shaw. A delicious afternoon tea was served, after which Mrs Tomlinson, on behalf of the guests, thanked the ladies for their kindness and said how sorry they were to be leaving. Mrs Martini also spoke a few words of thank-s to the ladies for their pleasant afternoon. During the afternoon opportunity was taken by the local hockey girls to make Mrs Tomlinson a presentation, and Miss \V. Wilkes, on behalf of the team, asked her to accept a fquntain-pen, and thanked her for the interest she had taken each hockey season. ISlrs Tomlinson suitably replied and musical honours were accorded the guests. Mrs Hicks was the accompanist. Flag five hundred was played for the rest of the afternoon, the winners being Mrs Tomlinson, Mrs H. Windsor and Miss Noeline Tomlinson. BASKETBALL CLUB FORMED. At a meeting held on Saturday it was resolved to form a basketball club at Matangi. Officers were elected as follows: Captain, Miss G. Hicks; vice-captain. Miss C. S'haw; hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss J. McDowell. In the course of the afternoon a practice match was held with Tauwhare CARD EVENING. The usual fortnightly card evening organised by the ball social commit - tee was held in the Matangi Hail on Saturday evening. There was a large number present and 1 lie winners of the -cards were Mrs Dawson and Mr Petit. Supper was served by the committee ladies.
