MOUNT EVEREST

4.30 O’CLOCK EDITION.

RUTTLEDGE EXPEDITION. EXCELLENT PROGRESS MADE.' IN THE HIGHEST SPIRITS. Cnited Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 18, 3 p.m.) LONDON, May 17. A copyright message from Mr Hugh Rut Hedge by wireless, via Calcutta, from Camp 3, says that Wyn Harris and Kempsun. with 36 porters, made a successful carry to camp 4, on the North Col, on April 14. The route in places was along very steep ice and snow, but was remarkably safe from avalanches. The porters went up splendidly, only one being unable to face the steepness of the final sections. The tents were pitched on a ridge within two feet or the remains of the tent left by Shipton when lie carried out a survey lust year. Smythe and Shipton took advantage of the quiet conditions with 41 porters, and occupied Hie camp for the purpose of continuing the advance up the ridge within the next day or two if the weather permits. They have established wireless communication with Camp 3. They report. that all tli© porters, who had previously assured me of their determination to push the attack home, are in the highest spirits. Wyn Harris, Kempson, Warren and Oliver, who will occupy Camp 4 when the first party advances, will form the •econd and third assault parties.
