NEW BRITISH SUBJECTS. FOREIGNERS NATURALISED. Thirty-two Yugoslavians, with a sprinkling of Jews, Germans, Danes, Swedes, Italians, Greeks and even a Scotsman, made a grand total of 80 foreigners whose naturalisation as New Zealanders in confirmed in the New Zealand Gazette. The registration is effected under the British Nationality and Status of Aliens in New Zealand Act, which authorises the Secretary of State to grant a certificate if the applicant has resided in a British Dominion for not less than five years. The requisites, however, of good character and a sound knowledge of the English language are specified, and the applicant must undertake to reside in one of His Majesty’s Dominions. The Minister of Internal Affairs retains complete power to give or withhold a certificate as he thinks most conducive to the public good. After taking the oath of allegiance the naturalised person is entitled to all political and other rights and privileges, as well as being subject to the duties and obligations of British-born subjects. Laourers and Fishermen. All the 80 applicants who are gazetted as having complied with the naturalisation regulations are males. Yugoslavians show preference for the pursuits of labourers, market gardeners, or fishermen but farming and the trades are fairly popular among the representatives of the Nordic races. Italy has her quota among tho fishmongers and restaurant proprietors. The lone representative of Palestine is described as a tiler, while the sole ex-Polish subject, bearing the name of Sful Gerszon Nowodworski follows the unusual occupation of a slipper maker. A Russian draper has a business at Paliiatua. Those of Scottish descent, to whom national tradition is very dear, will deem it an insult that one’ of the Clan McPherson, a laundry-hand at New Brighton, should renounce his Highland birthright and by paying the naturalisation fees obtain the status of a New Zealandei\
