BACKS TOO FAST.
OLD BOYB WIN AGAIN. TAUPIRT’S GOOD FORWARDS. Old Boys won their second match on IS T o. 1 ground, Rugby Park, when they accounted for Tauplrt East by 14 points to 3. Tho Old Boys’ backs, receiving a good share of the ball in the frst spell, were too fast for the opposition and ran up a sound score. In the second spell the visitors’ forwards played a bustling game, keeping Old Boys well bottled up and It was only lack of cohesion among the backs that prevented them from scoring. Following were the teams: — Old Boys.—R. Storey: F. Voice, A. Llssette, J. Heeps; .T. Carroll, H. Llssette; A. Gillespie: F. Jones. J. Tietlens, W. Whittaker. C. Holloway, .T. Gray, Geoff Chltty, C. Thomas, W. Coombrldge. Tauplrl East.—C. Robinson; B. Cleland. B. Hare, J. Davies; B. Davis, D. Catley: N. Penc: M. Taylor, G. Belcher. A. McNleol, C. Weston, L. Davis, J. Byrone, 11. Catley, R Rowe. Tauplrl had the early advantage, but the Old Boys’ backs handled. A Llssette making progress, hut Heeps was forced out. A fine llne-ktck by N. Pene reversed the position and the visiting backs operated. Hare coming through smartly, but he was In front of D. Catley when he took the ball and was recalled. The game was fast and open, both sets of backs throwing the ball about. A. Llsae't; thou kicked for tho corn?r flag and Voice ran up fast. The bounce beat him, however, and Taup»r i were lucky to escape with a force down. Heeps, A. Llssette and Voice parti-
cipated in a bright movement that made ground and then Gillespie handed to Carroll, who cut in well and passed inside for Coombrldge to score a good try, which A. Llssette converted— Old Boys 5 Taupiri East 0 Taupiri on the Attaok. B. Davis went off at this stage. W. Solomon replacing him at second fiveeighths for Taupiri. Catley and Taylor led the Taupiri forwards down in a great rush and they gained the ball from two scrums. D. Catley could not collect his passes, however, and Whittaker and Geoff Chitty led Old Boys back to half-way. The visitors were going great guns and had Old Boys well penned In their own twentyfive. Another great back movement by Old Boys nearly brought results, the backs all handling for the ball to come back to A. Llsette, who was pushed out at the corner flag. The home team came again. A. Llssette, Carroll, A. Lissette. Voice and A. Llssette handled in a fine movement, the centre again coming close to scoring. Hare just caught him in time, but Voice came through fast to collect a pass and go over for a great try. A Llssette failed —• • Old Bovs 8 Taupiri 0 Despite two hard knocks when he was tackled without the ball A. Lis- i sette was playing well and a little later he scored a fine try after Tietjens. Voice and Gillespie had handled. The kick failed— Old Boys 11 Taupiri 0 Lissette had to retire at this stage and T. Dovi took his place at centre. Theh alf-tlme came, however, as soon as the game was resumed. The Lead Increased. The Taupiri forwards, again headed by Catley and Taylor, gained the advantage, hut the backs could not. handle proficiently and many opportunities were lost. Dovi saved in fine style a little later, but Holloway, Whittaker and Geoff Chitty took play downfield for Whittaker to score, 'Coombrldge failing to convert— Old Boys ..-.i.'.... .t« 14 Taupiri East 0 N. Pene and J. Davies combined for the visitors, running well, but Dovi tackled soundly. Tietjens and Gray took play downfield, but Byrne, Belcher and Taylor brought the ball back and the visiting backs handled well for the first time, but the tackling was solid. Taupiri had the advantage territorially for a long spell. Whittaker intercepted a pass and took the play beyond the half-way, but Taupiri were soon back, Solomon -cutting through well. Taupiri had done all the attacking this spell but splendid tackling by Dovi and Voice kept them out on more than one occasion. Taylor bullocked through and went across with three men hanging on to him, but was recalled. However, from the scrum Solomon scored a good try, which Hare failed to convert — Taupiri East 3 Old Boys 14 The visitors kept up the pressure and were close again. Old Boys were continually bustled, hut managed to hold Taupiri out. The game was nowhere near ns spectacular as in the first spell and the match ended with the scores— Old Boys 14 Taupiri East 3 Mr D. Hemi was the referee.
