LUCIDUS.
Lucidus was a trifle unlucky in meeting the better-seasoned Woodful in the Orakau Hurdles on Saturday, but his exhibition was suggestive of an early return to. the winning lists. Over the latter part there was only he and Woodful In It and as they raced to the home turn It appeared momentarily that the Te Rapa horse would carry the day. However, while he had no chance with the winner, he accounted for the balance of the field Just as easily. Lucldus Is decidedly on the improve and should win a race over the obstacles.
Sergia. Sergia was another of the local brigade to win outright and she fully endorsed the promise she showed in her Avondale engagement. The Lord Quex filly has taken some time to get right, but now that, she has struck form she should add further to her laurels before the season draws to a close. Blackman. Blackman’s mediocre showing at Te Awamutu should not be held too strongly against him ns Saturday’s outing was his fTrst for some considerable time and lie was a trifle on the pretty side when he took his place in the Ilairini Handicap field on Saturday. He will be all the better for that race and should be an improved gelding when next he goes into the starter’s hands. A Likely Lightweight. Whirling lias been moving along steadily in bis trials at Te Rapa and with bis partiality for easing conditions lie must be conceded a chance on the minimum in the open sprint on the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s Winter meeting on Saturday. I-t will be remembered that he won attractively on the second day of the last Te Rapa fixture In heavy going. Prince Acre. There is little the matter with the present condition of Prince Acre and as his best races have been run in heavy going he will need only to be himself on the day to have a say in the decision of the open six on Saturday. Lack of recent racing of course may tell against him. but if a surprise is recorded it is quite on the cards it may come from this direction. Racewhlp. Racewhip has been schooling encouraging of recent weeks and interest will attach to his showing in the Te Kuiti Hurdles on Saturday. Since he was relegated to he jumping brigade A. Winder's representative has proved a disappointment, although his form on occasions has been such as to encourage his connections sufficiently to hold out hopes for his ultimate success. May Surprise. The President’s Handicap field on Saturday bears a very open aspect, and there is every likelihood of a surprise in which case the prospects of the Gay Shield mare Sirona will need to be taken into every consideration. After winning well in the High-weight company at the last Tc Rapa meeting she failed on the second day of the Avondale gathering and the heavy going at the time affected her chances. Since then she lias been working well and will certainly lack nothing on the score of condition when she goes into the starter’s hands. She appreciates the sting out of the ground, but heavy going hampers her. Orac’s Ohances. Orac proved an expensive failure at Hawera, but his exhibitions, neverthe less, held promise of better things and with ordinary luck in the running of the Otorohanga Handicap he may be seen to better advantage. He has demonstrated in the past, on the tracks, his ability to handle easing conditions. Of late a patient policy lias been pursued with M. J. Carroll’s representative and he has been working better of late than at any previous stage of bis t career. Tradesman Looks Well. Tradesman is by no means a spent light as he has recently demonstrated in bis trials on I lie I rack and while be is looking' fit and well and should not disgrace himself in bis engagements at Te Rapa on Saturday. While he has h not been burning up tlie tracks the quality of his track essays indicates that lie is approaching his old form. Silver Briar. Silver Briar recently returned to the active brigade and lias been working along freely at headquarters. The Silverado mare is now carrying more condition than formerly and (J. Moran has her in the right condition to enter on a solid preparation. Her next appearance will he at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting which opens on Saturday.
