LADIES’ HOCKEY

FIRST MATCHES PLAYED. NURSES' TEAM VICTORIOUS. TECHNICAL OLD GIRLS’ WIN. The first round of the Waikato Ladies’ Hockey Association’s competition was commenced on Saturday when, meeting Oddfellow’S at Boyes Park, the newly-formed Technical ‘B team cave a good exhibition in view of the fact that several players were new to the game. In the first spell. Oddfellows had a mastery over the Technical eleven, but they failed to gain any material advantage from their aggression. Frequently, how r ever, the Technical forwards broke through, but while some bright individual play was witnessed, good stick work by the opposing backs kept these advances from the goal line. After pressing strenuously, Oddfellows gained their first fruits of the season when Miss M. Wright shot a smart goal. During the second half the play was mainly in the Technical quarter, where only sound defensive tactics kept the opposing team at bay. Breaking away, the Technical forwards frequently took the play In the other direction, but the Oddfellow*s backs, sure in their stick work, were quick in getting the ball back. Frequent offside infringements spoiled Technical’s best chances of scoring. Near the conclusion of the game, a vigorous effort by the Technical team resulted in a goal by Miss B. Altken. The game resulted in a draw’, both teams securing equal points.

Nurses Defeat Leamington. A feature of the game between Leamington and Nurses was the openness of the play. The Nurses put out an excellent team, making some very fast forward moves. However, their handling at times gave many advantages to Leamington, who frequently took the ball quickly down Hie field. Their backs, too, played solidly. Following desultory play after halftime, the game opened up when a fullback of the Nurses cleared In midfield. Taking advantage, A. Tassell followed up and scored brilliantly on her own account. Throughout, the game was evenly contested as the score—Nurses i, Learnington ni 1 — indicated. HOROTIU DEFEATED. Travelling to Horotiu, the Technical Old Girls' A team were successful in

beating Horotiu by 2 goals to 1. rp he game was evenly contested in the first half, but later Technical assumed the advantage over their opI onents and when they had gained their second score the game was in their hands.
