BADMINTON
GAME IN HAMILTON. WEBT END CLUB. REVIEW OF PLAYERS. (By “Side Out-”) The West End Club, while only commencing its third sea-son, has the i distinction of being the second largest jelub in the Waikato, with a memberi ship of 40 and a lengthy waiting list, ; which will give some indication of the I growth of the game in recent years. I The club was originally founded as a small social club, playing one night 1 a week, but last season enlarged its ! membership and entered A and 13 i teams in Waikato competitions. While | finishing third in the A grade was very • gratifying to many, it did not realise ! the fondest hopes of the original ! founders of the club. There is some ! consolation, however, in the fact that iin two seasons they have lost such ; ! outstanding players, chiefly through j transfer, as Misses J. Mclntosh, N. | Jackson, E. Seaville, Mesdames A. H. Ward, C. Colson, F. A. Lamb, and 1 I Messrs G. Brough, N- Bryant, J. ■Parker, R. Edmonds, and J. Hooper—- | players who would make their presi ence felt in most clubs of the Do- ! minion. 1 j Running over last year’s A team jit is found that N. Bryant, captain and | star performer, has been transferred j to Auckland, but the ladies’ team has | suffered even more severely, losing • Mrs A. H. Ward, the top member, and Mrs F. A. Lamb, a most enthusiastic land probably the best exponent of the j combined game. Mrs Lamb has re- : tired through an ankle injury. It looks as though the brunt of the attack must fall on R. B- Macklow, i who, with N. Bryant, scored some j great victories, and Miss P. Sorby, ! winner ol' the B grade Auckland ladies’ double with Miss 11. Hopkins. Should Go Far. . • Miss Sorby has only to polisli up her drop shots and general net work i ; to go a long way in badminton, as she i clears and smashes well. The remaini mg members are Dr. F. A. Lamb and ■ j C. M. Collins, who were semi-finalists ;in the Auckland B grade doubles • j championship. i Tlie new members include a number . ' of tennis conquests from the Hamilton ; Club, and high hopes are held of llieir ‘ j rapid advancement. A new player ; wlio” impresses with It is all-round i i game and severe overhead is I. Owsley, wiio must give the selectors I < serious consideration before his ulti- • male ranking in I lie A grade is deter- ■ mined. Then there is C. Henrv, who . played in the Waikato B team against i j Taranaki, and J.’ Granville —the new ’secretary—who should rapidly improve as the season advances. 5 j The beginners with the tennis rc- ’ putation include B. bold, A. bold, G. i bold, u. Jones, br. Annett, M. Anl drews, and Misses P. Sorby, E. Green ’ and Mrs Boden, and their activities 1 I will be followed with interest. Miss jM. Beale, who did so well last year ", : ,n her first season, will meet compeli- ; ; h°B for inclusion in Hie teams from ’ .Misses P. Rogers, Seceombe and Mrs ■ 1 McLean, who is reaping the reward ! I of keenness and intensive practice. It ; j is held in some quarters that the lleet- ’ ; footed Miss Rogers lias a good future 1 in Hie game, providing she can secure - j depth in her clearing shots. 1 I When “Side Out” dropped in on •, e she was much impressed |by the general enthusiasm of the members, and this augurs well for the game, as Hie club has a nucleus of a side which if developed along right lines should be capable of extending the best in a season or two. It is the intention to review next week the champion club of the Waikato—the Hamilton Club.
