Described by the police as a drug addict, Hazel Mary Carswell (35), sat and trembled in the dock at the Police Court this morning when she was charged with stealing clothing and cutlery valued at W. from a private home where she had been employed as a nurse for an elderly male patient and further with procuring dangerous drugs without authority She pleaded guilty to all the charges. Mr Aekins said the accused had ac“ quired the drug habit years ago and had been unable to leave ofl’. Now she is in very bad health. Repmng to Mr Wyvern Wilson. 9.11., counsel said she had been an inmate of Pakatou Island for two years, coming away in February last.

The Magistrate said it was a wrong practice for chemists to accept orders for drugs over the telephone. The police said the accused had been very frank. The stolen articles had been recovered from second-hand shops.
