WOMAN ATTACKED.
IN SERIOUS CONDITION. YOUNG MAORI ARRESTED. (By Tclegrapr..—Pres? Association.) KAITAIA. Friday. Mrs R. G. Brien. the wife of a farmer, is at her home in Church Roarl. in a serious condition as the result of a brutal attack to which sh - was subjected on Wednesday al'lernonn and in connection with which H like re Harris (20), a Maori, ins held in custody. It appears that Mrs Brien went to llie sleeping quarters <>r an employee on llie farm lo make llie beds, c!*\. and on opening Ihe door was felled by a. blow and rendered unennsei.uis. Later her cries attracted the attention of tier husband and others working nearbv. Medical aid was summoned, and Dr. Rule considers that from eight to ten blows must have been dealt Ihe unfortunate victim. A pea rifle was found on the lloor of llie room. Hie slock of which was broken and bad bloodstains. Reports bad beeji made lo (lie police that monev had been taken from the bach and a constable had sol a Iran with a mraked pound note as bait. The note with three others and some silver had disappeared. A Maori had been noticed near the bach during llie afternoon and was [later secu proceeding..towards Oturu.
