POTATOES SCARCE
SHIPMENTS DELAYED. EQQS PLENTIFUL. INCREASED FISH SUPPLY. Following the low prices which have been ruling recently, supplies of fruit have been forwarded in smaller quantities and prices have shown a rise, more in line with rates ruling in Hastings. The final -shipment of Jamaican oranges has arrived. Tomatoes are quite finished, but hothouse tomatoes and beans have arrived on the market and are meeting keen competition. Supplies of vegetables have been coming forward much more freely. Heavy supplies of cabbage have come forward, while cauliflower supplies have been on a par with last week’s supply- Pumpkins are still in oversupply. Brussels sprouts made their first appearance on the market during the week. Potatoes have been practically unprocurable owing to the delay of shipments from the South Island by the stormy weather. Large quantities are expected at the end of the week, and it is expected that they will bring about £lO to £ll per ton. The following prices are current: Apples.—Cox’s Orange Pippins, 7s to 7s Gd; Delicious, Gs to 7s; Jonathans, ex cooller 7s to 7s Gd, orchard stored 5s to Gs; Ballarats, -is to Gs Gd; other varieties, -is to ss. Pears: Louise Bon Jerseys, 7s to 7s Gd; Winter Cole and Winter Nelis, best 8s to 8s Gd, others -is to Gs, all threequarter bushels. Passion fruit, 5s to Gs GAd per tomato case; lemons, first grade 12s to 14s, medium Us to 10s, rougt os to Gs; Jamaican oranges, 32s to 355; bananas, ripe and turning, 22s to 23s Gd; quinces, 9s to 12s; tree tomatoes, red variety 4s Gd to ss, black 5s Gd to Gs Gd; hothouse beans, 5d to Gd per lb; hothouse tomatoes, first grade 9d to lUd per lb, others Gd to Bd. Prioes for Vegetables. Cabbages: Savoy 9s to 10s per sack, Drumhead 4s to 5s per bag; cauliflower, 7s to 8s Gd per bag; green peas, best to 9s per sugar bag, others 4s to Gs; citron and pie melons, 4d to l6d each according to -size; swedes, 3s to 3s 3d per sugar bag; kumeras, best 5s to Gs per bag, others, 4s to ss; pumpkins, red 2s Gd to 3s per bag, greys 3s to 4s Gd cvvt; marrows, 2s Gd to 3s Gd per dozen; onions, 3s Gd to 3s 9d per sugar bag; potatoes, local 7s to 8s per cvvt; lettuce, 2s Gd to 3s Gd per banana case; rhubarb, 2s Gd to 3s Gd per dozen; carrots, Gd to iOd per dozen; parsnips, lUd to is; beetroot, Gd to 8d; leeks, Is to Is 3d; spring onions, Gd to lUd, all per dozen; Brussels sprouts, 4d to per lb. Dairy Produce and Eggs. There has been a slight drop in the price of eggs, supplies being plentiful. First grade are selling at 2s 4d per dozen and pullols’ eggs at ‘2s. Butter is steady. Although there are yet no supplies of deep-sea fish coming forward, schnapper are plentiful with the 4ibatement of stormy conditions.
