THEFT OF TOOTHPASTE. COURT'S LENIENCY ABUSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday. “ You know I am too old a hand to believe your story that it was all a joke,” said Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. to Newell Harry Williams, a waterside worker, who appeared on summons and pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a carton of toothpaste valued at £2 os, tlie property of the Union Steam Ship Company. A wharf clerk gave evidence that he saw the accused carry the carton away from the steamer Wingatui, a distance of about 4 0 feet. When told to put the carton back he did so.
