BANDS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l~‘ew citizens of Hamilton realise that there is now in the town a magnificent silver shield which has [come to Hamilton for the tlrst time :since it was given for competition in ,1908. This trophy is the fine Boosey iShield, which was presented in 1908 ito the North island Brass Bands lAssociati‘on for competition among the B grade bands of the Dominion, and ii was won this year by the Hamilton itlitizens‘ Band at the recent. Easter 1 contest. i A perusal oi‘ the names on the shield reveals an interesting record, the. winners being as follows: 1908, Palmerston North; 1909, Petone; 1910, Nelson Garrison; 1911, VVellington Tramways; 1912, Uisborne City; 1914, lnvcrcargill Hibernian; 1921. liannevirke Municipal; 1922, Palmers—ton North Municipal; 1923, First Battalion. \Velling‘ton Regimental; 1924, Sixth l-ianralri Regimental; 1925, Dunedin Artillery; 1983, 193-1 and 1935, Rotorua Municipal; 1936, Hamilton Citizens‘. ;

From 1914 to 1921 the shield was not contested, on account of the Great. “fan It is interesting to note that the ‘llmnilton‘ciiizens‘ Band, in winning the shield this year, scored ten more points in the aggregate than last year’s winners. Rotorua1n the light or the Hamilton Citizens‘ Band‘s success in winning this and the Hymn Test Shield it seems strange ‘that no public recognition has been accorded the hand in Hamilton. \Vhile other competing bands were accorded welcomes on their return to their respective towns the Hamilton Uitizens' Band was not even invited to participate in the recent Anzac Day parade. \Vhy was this distinction made? There appears to be no logical reason for treatment of this nature being meted out to a hand which has, to say the least. placed Hamilton on the map in the band world—l am, etc., CREDIT \VHERE CREDIT IS DUE; Hamilton, May 5. t
