The state of the investment market for local body loans was indicated in a letter received by the Thames \‘alley Electric Power Board to-day from a large insurance company which had been asked by the board to negotiate n loan of £15,000 required on Septem—her 1. it was stated by the company. that as applications for loans on mortgage. from which the return was higher than on loans to locai bodies. were being freely received. it was unable to state at the present juncture whether the board's applicatlnn for a loan even so far ahead as September 1 could be considered. The ruling rate for local body loans was now 3} per cent. but even it 32 per cent were available and the terms longer it was doubted whether the return would be suillt‘irntly attractive in comparison with first—class mortgage investments.
