THE AUCKLAND MEETING
TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE
NOTES FROM THE TRACK. (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Friday. The weather was perfect for training work at Ellerslie this morning, but there was not a great amount of work done, most of the horses having had their final gallops yesterday. No. 3 grass track was’open. _ The going was better than it was erlier in the week, and a few of the latest arrivals ware allotted useful sprinting tasks. Otairi (H. Gray) worked freely over six furlongs, runping the distance in 1.23 1-5. This gelding is looking in first-class condition. Courageous and Shortly ran six furlongs, covering the first three in 39 2-ssec, and the full distance in 1.18 1-5. Both’horses did their work well, and there was little between them. Star Stranger and Historic jumped off at the six furlongs post., running the first three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. They ware together at this stage, but Historic w r as eased up after going half a mile, and Star Stranger finished up alone, running the distance in 1.18 3-5. Star Stranger appeared to
handle the going better than previously. Great . Charter and Commandant, after runhing the first two furlongs in 25 2-ssec, completed five furlongs in. 1.5 1-5. Great Charter impressed most. Chrysology shaped nicely in a haumile sprint in 52 2-ssec. Courtesy has developed a cold, and will not he a starter in the Shorts Handicap to-morrow. Risk, engaged in the Hunters’ Steeplechase, ran home from the halfmile post in 55 l-ssec. Chromodyne, not doing his best, covered three furlongs in 41 4-ssec. Lady Quex completed a half-mile sprint in 53 4-ssec, shaping better in the going than she did earlier in the week.
Prodice strode over six furlongs in 1.28 2-5, pulling hard all the way. Now that. the weather conditions are more favourable and the going will be better than anticipated earlier in the week, and will fulfil her engagement in the Mitchelson Cup.
High Pitch, looking really well, had Sun as a companion over six furlongs. They ran the first three furlongs In 38 3-ssec, and completed the task in 1.18 4-5. Both shaped well. The Mitchelson Cup candidate, Nassock, cantered round to the three furlongs post and ran home in 41sec. Others to do useful work were spalpiko, Rose Lupin, Waltzer, Biddy’s Boy, Flying Prince, Awamutu, Lovely Boy, and Scaramouehe. Maui has been scratched for the Flying Handicap.

MATAMATA STABLES.
HORSES FOR AUCKLAND. PRINCE VAL WORKS WELL. (Special to the Times.) MATAMATA, Friday. Standfast has been striding, along in his work. The mile and a-half of the Mitchelson Cup may find a weak spot but, on his work he will beat more than will beat him and R. McTavish will ride Standfast and it is more than likely different tactics will be used compared with the Avondale Cup race in which he endeavoured to win from end to end, but found Prodice a bit too good. Vairoe, who is also under R. Mateer s charge has been galloping particularly well and is sure to be in more demand in the Gordon Handicap to-morrow than when he won the Champion Hack Plate at Avondale when at a double figure price. He is a very promising horse. G. A. Reid’s Team. G. A. Reid has a useful team in work. Glenstar was to have made the trip to Avondale but injured a hind leg while schooling and had to be let up for a week. Glenstar will be at Ellerslie. This big fellow has a tendency to run down his fences. (However, his record so far is very satisfactory. Valstrcet may be given some jumping to quieten him down. It is a pity he is unruly at the barrier as he has pace to go with the best. He should make good as a jumper as he is one of the gamcst.
Other horses in G. A. Reid’s stable' include a two-year-old filly by Musketoon—Miss Amans, therefore a halfsister to Marble King. This filly has developed remarkably well since she started work and she will be heard from when raced. A Peach Brandygelding is also working well, but will take a lot of time as he is on the lean side.
.Prince Val, from J. Clothier’s stable, has been hitting out in brilliant style and will make his presence felt in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday.
