BEEF IN GOOD DEMAND.
SHEEP REPORTED WEAKER.
EASIER TENDENCY IN PIGS. An average yarding of beef cattle : met with a good demand at the weekly : Westfield fat stock sale yesterday, and values for all classes were on a level with last week’s prices. Extra choice ox again realised 39s per 1001 b. j Sheep were penned in fairly large numbers and a weaker demand re- ! suited in lower prices, especially for prime ewes. Spring lambs met with keen competition. In some cases prices advanced by 2s to 3s a head. A smaller number of calves came forward and higher values ruled. ■ There was a shortage of extra prime vealers. . Although pigs were reported in some instances to be in greater supply, bidding was erratic, and there was an easier tendency present at the close of the sale. Store pigs were fairly plentiful and values were decidedly lower. Loan and Mercantile. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report as follows on the Westfield fat stock market yesterday:— Beef was penned in average numbers and sold under steady competition at late values. Extra choice ox sold to £1 19s per 1001 b; choice and prime, £1 15s to £1 18s; ordinary and plain, £1 12s to £1 14s 6d; prime young cow and heifer beef, £1 15s to £1 17s; ordinary cow beef, £1 10s to £1 14s. Heavy prime steers realised £l3 15s to £ls; lighter prime, £l2 to £l3 12s Gd; light prime, £lO 5s to £ll 15s; unfinished and small, £5 to £10; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; heavy prime, £9 10s to £lO 7s 6d; lighter, £8 to £9 7s Gd; light cows, £6 10s to £7 17s 6d; other cows, £4 to £0 ss. Large numbers of sheep were yarded and values, were somewhat lower, especially for prime ewes,’which dropped 3s to 4s a head. Extra heavy prime wethers made £1 10s to £1 13s; heavy prime, £1 ,8s to £1 9s 9d;i medium prime, £1 6s ,to £1 7s 9d; light prime, £1 4s to £l 5s 9d; small and unfinished, 17s 6d‘to £1 3s 6d; heavy prime ewes, l’Bs to £1 Is ■ medium prime ewes, 16s to 17s 9d; light prime ewes, 13s to 15s 9d; inferiorly fatted ewes, 7s 6d upwards; prime hoggets, 16s to £1 4s 6d. Smaller numbers of spring lambs than last week sold at improved rates, the increase being 2s and 3s per head. Prices were from 17s to £1 7s 6d. A smaller yarding of pigs met with a dull sale. Values were on a par with last week’s quotations. Choppers sold from £2 to £3; heavy and medium baconers, £3 to £3 10s; light baconers and heavy porkers, £2 12s to £2 18s; medium porkers and light porkers, £2 5s 'to £2 10s; small and unfinished porkers, £1 15s to £2 4s. Values were easier for store pigs, which were penned in average numbers. Large stores, £1 10s to £1 IGs; slips, £1 to £1 8s; weaners, 15s to £1 7s. Average numbers of calves were penned and values had an easing tendency on late quotations. Runners I made £5 10s to £8 12s 6d; heavy vealers,. £4 15s to £5 12s; medium, £4 to £4 12s; light, £3 6s to £3 16s; smaller, £2 10s to £3 3s; small and fresh-dropped, 7s to £2 8s; rough calves, £1 to £2 ss.
Datgety and Company. At the Westfield fat stock sale today Messrs Dalgety and Company Ltd. offered ox beef in usual numbers. The quality was first-class and sold under a steady demand. Late rates again ruled. Cow and heifer beef came forward in usual numbers. The demand was not keen and values eased. Extra choice ox sold to 39s per 100 lb; choice and prime, 37s to 38s; second and plain, 34s to 365; prime young cow and heifer beef, 34s to 365; ordinary cow beef, 25s to 335. Heavy prime steers made £l4 10s to £ls; lighter prime steers, £l3 17s 6d to £l4 7s 6d; light prime steers, £l2 5s to £l3 7s 6d. Large numbers of sheep again came forward, and with the exception of a few odd pens of extra good sheep, values generally were easier. Hoggets comprised a fair portion of the offering, and here also values were easier. Heavy prime wethers brought 28s to 28s 3d; medium prime, 25s to 27s 3d; light and unfinished, 21s 3d to 23s 6d: heavy prime ewes, 17s 6d to 20s; lighter prime, 14s 6d to 16s 6d; other ewes, 13s to 13s 3d; Lamlbs were offered in lesser numbers than last week, and values were slightly better. Medium prime made 24s to 255. There was a ready sale for calves at equal to late quotations. Heavy vealers made £4 10s to £5 ss; medium, £3 10s to £4 ss; light, £2 10s to £3' ss; small, £1 5s to £2 ss; fresh dropped, 6s to 20s. There was a steady sale for pigs at prices on a par with last week. Heavy baconers made £3 5s to £3 9s; medium, £3 to.£3 3s; light, £2 14s to £2 19s; heavy porkers, £2 12s to £2 15s; medium and light, £2 2s to £2 10s.
Alfred Bucklend and Sons. Messrs A. Buckland and Sons report:— At Westfield we penned 326 head of fat cattle (220 steers, 106 cows and heifers). The quality generally was first-class. There was an improved demand, and last week’s values were easily maintained. Ectra choice sold to 39s per 1001 b; choice and prime, 37s to 38s; secondary and plain, 34s to 365; prime young cow and heifer beef, 34s to 365; secondary, 25s to 335. Extra heavy prime steers ranged from £l7 to £l9 2s 6d; heavy, £ls 10s to £l6 15s; lighter, £l4 to £ls 7s 6d; light, £l2 10s to £l3 17s 6a; small and unfinished, £9 to £l2 7s 6d; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, I £ll 10s to £l3 2s 6d; heavy, £9 to i £JI ss; lighter, £7 to £8 17s Gd; oLhers, £5 10s to £6 17s 6d. There was an average yarding of
sheep, the demand for which was not keen, and, taking the sale on the .whole, Jhere was a further decline in values. A total of 976 sheep was sold. Extra heavy prime wethers realised £1 9s 6d to £1 10s 6d; heavy prime, £1 7s 6d to £1 9s; medium to heavy prime, £1 6s to £1 7s 3d; light to medium prime, £t 4s to £1 5s 9d; unfinished wethers, £1 to £1 3s 6d;; extra heavy prime young ewes, £1 to £1 2s 6d; heavy prime ewes, 18s to 19s 9d; lighter prime ewes, 16s to 17s 9d; other tollable ewes, 14s to 15s 9d; others, 10s 6d to 13s 6d.. The 53 spring lambs which came forward were all of prime quality. Competition was extra' keen, with a sharp- rise in values. Best lambs made £1 8s 6d to £1 11s; lighter lambs, £1 Gs 6d to £1 8s 3d.
We had a smaller entry of fat and young calves. All classes met good competition and higher values ruled. Runners made £5 15s to £lO 2s 6d for a heavy Shorthorn heifer; heavy vealers, £5 to £5 8s (no extra prime were offered) ; medium vealers, £3 15s to £4 19s; light, £3 6s to £3 11s; small vealers, £2 5s to £2 12s; bucket-fed calves £1 12s to £1 18s; rough and unfinished, £1 5s to £1 10s; small and fresh dropped, 5s to £l. There were 213 oalves sold. There was an average yarding of fat pigs. Bidding was erratic, but prices generally were about equal to those ruling at last week’s sale, with an easing tendency toward the close. Choppers made £2 15s to £3 9s; heavy baconers, £3 4s to £3 10s; light and medium, £2 6s to £2 10s; small and porkers, £2 12s to £2 15s; light and medium, £2 5s to £2 10s; small and unfinished, £1 15s to £2 Is. Stores realised £1 14s toc£l 16s; slips, £1 10s to £1 12s; good weaners, £1 3s to £1 7s; small, 16s to £l. A total of 323 pigs were sold. •
