RACING IN AUSTRALIA.
NIGHTMARCH & PHAR LAP. THEIR MERITS DISCUSSED. AMOUNTS AND CHIDE ALSO OPPONENTS. Such a controversy arose when Nlghtmarch won the Melbourne Cup and Phar Lap failed that the next meeting of the two over a distance is eagerly awaited (says a Sydney writer). What grand prospects the weight-for-age events at the autumn meeting present. Nlghtmarch, Chide, Amounls, and Phar Lap are the central figures. Amounts is not a stayer, but fresh from his victories in Melbourne, his admirers look to him lo increase his winnings, although it would appear that his chances in this regard are not particularly bright. It is difficult to imagine a repetition of his .Melbourne feat, for instance, for lie has sterner material opposed to him lhan was the case in the south. Phar Lap has shown himself better than lie was in the spring. It is to he expected that he would improve, for it it doubtful if lie had finished growing when he was set the task of winning the Derbies and the Cup, and in any case it is natural for the three-year-olds to improve by the time the autumn is reachedConparabla With Strephon. Phar Lap established In Melbourne that he is comparable with Strephon. In fact, some judges go further and rate him higher than that freak of breeding. One looks to him to reopen his winning account here by succeeding in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm —a race won by Strephon in his year. Nightmarch ran at Moorefield where his third was the occasion for a hostile demonstration.. Chide’s debut will probably he at weight-for-age, and all four should be at their top by the time the events at Randwick come up for decision. Phar Lap will he an absentee from the Autumn Stakes, run on the first day of the meeting, for he will contest the St Leger—a gift for him. Amounis may tackle the mile and a half, although his greatest chance is the Allaged Stakes, run on the third day, over a mile- On that day, too, is illc Cumberland Stakes, run over a mile and three-quarters, a distance exceded by the A.J.C. Plate, run over two miles and a quarter, on the fourth day. Fourth Day Meeting. It is possible that the public will have to wait for the fourth day to see Phar Lap opposed to NightmarchThe All-aged Stakes Is the richest weight-for-age event at the meeting, and since at a mile Nightmarch seems equally as brilliant as at two miles, he may he set against Amounis, leaving Phar Lap and Chide to do battle in the Cumberland Stakes. Therefore, the A.J.C. Plate becomes invested with much interest, for it seems the race most certain to draw Phar Lap, Nightmarch, and Chide together. Sydney sportsmen are divided concerning Phar Lap and Nightmarch, New Zealanders differ concerning Nightmarch and Chide, and the sporting world welcomes ihe opportunity of witnessing gallopers in the most severe weight-for-age lest in Australasia.
