WAIKATO CRICKET.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. WENDING UP THE SEASON. COACH SUGGESTION MOOTED. At the meeting of the Management Committee of the Waikato Cricket Association this week Mr R. Johnston, jun., presided. Mr E. J. L. Whiting reported that he had ■ attended a meeting of the Headmasters’ Association, and placed the views of the Cricket Association before them - regarding the public schools contributing towards the upkeep of cricket grounds, and that he had agreed on behalf of the Cricket Association to accept £3 3s for this season. Mr Whiting’s action was confirmed, but it was decided to reopen the matter at the beginning of next season.
The Piako Cricket Association advised that it would not be able to enter a challenge this season for the South Auckland Shield. The secretary was directed to advise the Waipa Cricket Association, the holders of the Shield, accordingly. The Y.M.C.A- Cricket Club wrote asking for permission to enter a senior team in the competitions next season.
it was felt that the matter was beyond the committee’s jurisdiction, and it was decided to request the Y.M.C.A. Club to enter its nomination prior to the annual general meeting, when the matter could be discussed.
Senior Competition. As the winners of the senior competition had been decided, and the matches still to play could not affect the result, the competition .was declared closed. Several suggestions for continuing play were discussed, and it was decided to play a joint Hamilton East and Franklon team against a combined team from the Hamilton and Old Boys’ Clubs. As this left one of the grass wickets vacant, a Senior B game was allocated to the wicket between Cambridge and Ngaruawahia. The final of the Reid Cup, between Wholesalers and Timberworkers was set down for Thursday and Monday nights, play to start at 4 p.m. Junior Competition. As the one match still to play in the junior competition could not aftect the result, Hie Technical High School Club was declared the winner, and it was decided to play a knock-out round for the Howden Cup. The Howden Medal was also allotted to the junior grade, and is to be given to the junior with the best all-round performance during the season. The Emergency CommL.ee (Messrs It. Johnston, A. E. Gibbons, and E. J. L. Whiting) was empowered to make what arrangements it could regarding the Taranaki team's visit. The hope that the president, Mr A. E. Manning, and Mrs Manning would have an enjoyable trip abroad was expressed, several speakers commenting on the services Mr Manning had rendered to the association during the season. The Coach Question. The question of engaging a cricket coach was discussed. -Mr Gibbons considered that funds should be in hand before any engagement of a cricket coach should be made, He also thought that it was too large an undertaking for the Waikato Cricket Association to contemplate unaided, and that the Auckland Association should be approached with a view to mutual assistance in engaging a coach Mr Gibbons suggested alternatively that it might be possible to obtain the services of a man who could undertake the combined duties of head groundsman and coachMr S. E. Senior considered, in view of the expense, an Australian coach would be preferable to an Englishman, and UiaLany coacli engaged would not be able to occupy his time fully at coaching, and should also be given some congenial occupation, and thus reduce the cost lo the association. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Gibbons, Whiting, Senior, Johnson, and Reekie was appointed to go fully’ into Hie question. IVI.C.C. Tour, The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote thanking the Waikato Association for its assistance in helping to make the visit of the M.C.C. Xi. to New Zealand such a success. Some ol' the umpires in the junior grade were reported as being doubtful as to the ruling covering a bowler who delivered a ball with botli feet behind the bowling crease. The secretary read the rule and notes thereon, as laid down by the M. which state that a bowler may bowl with both feet behind the bowling crease, provided one foot is within the return crease. Although the notes on this rule were concise, and covered the point raised, it was considered that there was room for improvement in the general wording of them.
