A POPULAR OFFICER.

SERGT. MATHIESON FAREWELLED. TRIBUTE FROM THE FORGE. A popular and efficient officer, Sergeant Mathiesou was farewelled by a large gathering of his comrades at the police station yesterday afternoon. Constable 11. M. Kirby, on behalf of the uniform branch, expressed the genuine- regret felt at the departure from Hamilton of the sergeant, an officer who, during his eighteen months’ service in Hamilton, had earned the respect of his men. While they were sorry to see him go, they were pleased to know that he had received merited promotion. Constable Kirby assured Sergeant Mathieson that he was leaving for Timaru carrying with him the best wishes of the Hamilton Force, and on their behalf presented him with a fine ebony walking stick, suitably engraved. Dectective-Sergeant J. Thompson joined with the previous speaker in wishing Sergeant Mathieson success in his new sphere of activities. He referred to the cordiality that had always existed between the plain and uniform branches in Hamilton and hoped that this desirable state of affairs would continue. Sergeant Mathieson thanked the previous speakers for the many kind things said of him. He 'Was sorry to have to sever his connection with such a splendid body of men, and assured them that he would carry with him to Timaru pleasant recollections of his service among them. A happy function concluded with the singing of “ For He’s a Jolly Good. Fellow.”
