CONTESTS AT FEILDING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) FEILDING, Tuesday. The polo handicap cup games were continued to-day. Results were:— Wairapara A (9) defeated Parewanui (6) by 14 goals to 12. Matangi B (19) defeated Hawke’s Bay A (scr) hy 19 to 14. HANDICAP CUP GAMES. WAIMAI v. HAWKE’S BAY A. CLOSELY CONTESTED GAME. Play in the Handicap Cup games was continued at the New Zealand Polo Association’s tournament at Feilding yesterday afternoon, the most keenly contested game being that when the Savile Cup winners—Hawke’s Bay A—met and defeated Waimai after conceding them an 18 goal handicap, Hawke’s Bay 'being on the scratch mark. The first chukka opened at a galloping pace and had the Hawke’s Bay shooting been as accurate as their team work they would have overhauled the lead Waimai had in short time Towards the end of the first spell tin shooting improved, and three goals were registered by the Bay players.
Some idea of the number of mishits made hy Hawke’s Bay in the second chukka can he gathered by the fact that it registered 11 hits behind before any score came. The two goals put on by the scratch team in this chukka w r ere obtained by R. MacKenzie and Campbell—l B—s. In the nexl chukka, Waimai maintained a fast pace, but the Bay got home two goals through Lyons and Campbell—l B—7. The score rose to 18—10 in the fourth chukka, when F. McKenzie, Campbell and R. MacKenzie scored. Interest was still holding in the galloping game which Waimai was making, and when that team put on a goal early in the fifth chukka, the enthusiasm by the spectators was expressed in loud applause—l9—lo. Hawke's Bay then put on a spurt and produced four goals, one each from the four players—l9—l4. In the sixth chukka F. MacKenzie and Campbell brought the score to 19—16, and during the play H. W. Upton received an injury and had to retire. The vacancy was taken by his brother.
The final chukka opened with the scratch team still requiring three goals to even up the score, and these were obtained by Lyons. All square, the teams made it very willing as the? struggled for the deciding goal, which came from F. MacKenzie, who brought the score to 20—19. Messrs Hewitt and N. Scott were the umpires.
IWATANGI B. v. HAWKE’S BAY B.
EXCITING GAME PROVIDED. With each having a handicap of 19, Matangi B and Hawke’s Bay B met on level terms and provided an exciting game, the scores hanging closely together throughout. At the last chukka Hawke’s Bay was one up, the scores being 24—23. Matangi made a hoi pace and after three minutes’ pla} Brown goaled to make the score all square. In attacking the other goal, Phillips shot a beautiful backhander, and the game ended a minute latei with Matangi winning by one gcal, the final score being 25—24. The spectators roundly applauded the Waikato team for its splendid game. Mr E. E. Short refereed.
