MAGISTRATE ASSAULTED.

TROUBLE OVER A DOG-FIGHT. MAORI TO PAY £lO. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWERA, Monday. While proceeding to separate two dogs which were fighting in Patea Street on Friday, Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., was assaulted by the owner of the dogs, Maui Onekura, who as a result was fined £5 to-day by Justices in the Patea Court on a charge of assault, together with an additional £5 on a charge of urging the dogs to fight. It was urged by Constable Kelly that the case was not one of an ordinary dog-Cght. The animals had been fighting for some time, and though distressed were being urged to continue wheu Mr Salmon arrived. Actuated by humanitarian motives Mr Salmon was proceeding to -separate the combatants when he was thrown roughly aside by accused, who was one of a considerable crowd, and continued to urge the dog-s to light. Mr Salmon personally escorted accused on his way to the police station till met by a constable.
