MOUNTED RIFLES IN CAMP. OTHER UNBTS AT HOPU HOPU. REGIMENTAL SPORTS MEETINGThe military camp at Hopu Hopu is at present occupied by one of the largest contingents that has been in camp this year. The Waikato Mounted Rifles, comprising 32 o'fflcers and 270 men, under the command o.f Lieut.-Colonel C. R. Spragg, Y.D., with Captain J. A. M. Clachan as ad-, jutant, occupy one section of the camp, while representatives of several other units are under canvas on adjoining land. This latter section, which is composed of men who have not completed their training with their own units, is under the command of Major P. H. Bell, D.S.O. The Mounted Rifles are undergoing their annual period of training, which is the only military work carried out during the year, with the exception of a special course for officers and N.C.O.’s. So far the weather has been favourable, thus enabling the syllabus to be fully carried out. During the week the- regiment was inspected by Brigadier H. R. Potter, C.M.G., officer commanding the Northern Command, 1 and it is expected that Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., will 'inspect the unit before camp is struck. The men are the usual excellent type of young Waikato farmer, and are drawn from every quarter of the district. About 60 per cent, .of them are doing their first course of training. The horses generally are in better condition than was the c-ase in previous years. The health of the men has been excellent, and there have been no mis- ! haps worthy of mention. I The social side of camp life has I been capably controlled by the 1 Y.M.C.A., and every night there has ! been some form of entertainment for the men. Boxing lias been held in the evenings, and Ibis has proved a popular diversion. A troupe of entertainers, from Hamilton were accorded a great reception. Regimental Sports. On Saturday afternoon the regimental sports were held on the parade i ground. (( (t Wrestling on -Horseback- —“C Squadron, 1. Visitors’ Day. Yesterday afternoon an “At Home’’ was held, and the camp was thrown open to visitors. A large number availed themselves of the opportunity to inspect, the various points of. interest. The visitors were entertained by the Waikato Regimental and Hamilton Municipal Band, who journeyed from Hamilton. This evening the men of the unit will hold a social and dance for their friends.
