LABOUR AT THE HELM
(To the Editor). Sir, —The Leader of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mr H- E. 'Holland, in a recent address, made it tolerably clear that he is most anxious to secure a seat on the Treasury Benches. He outlined his scheme of getting there but I for one do not think he will realise his ambition during the life of the present Parliament. Labour’s only hope of getting into power is by securing an absolute majority at a general election. It would not be good lor Labour to be in power on suflerance. To carry out its policy it must be paramount and independent o other parties. This is forcibly shown In- Britain. The MacDonald Government is impotent; it is dependent upon the Liberals to keep it in office, and, therefore,, it has to proceed with the brake on. The result is that some of the rank and file are impatient and there is a danger of a rift. Until Mr Holland can ascend the Treasury benches with an absolute majority behind him he would be well advised to curb his ambition and keep off. i am, etC " LOOKER ON.
