DROVER DROWNED.
fatality in well. TRIED TO RESCUE DOG. A drowning fatality occurred on the farm of Mr S. Slow, Koromatua, last: evening. Mr Alexander Lewis, a middle-agecl drover, who had lived alone in a bach on the farm and had last been seen on Tuesday morning, was found drowned in a well. It is believed that Mr Lewis lost his life in an effort- to rescue a dog which was also discovered in the well. Deceased had apparently used a pair of braces to lower himself down. These were found tied round a pipe leading into the well, which was 18ft. deep with Sft of water at the bottom. INQUEST OPENED. EVIDENCE OF IDENTIFICATION. An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Alexander Lewis, whose body was found in a race at Koromatua, was opened before the coroner, Mr F. XV. Platts, G.M.G., S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Albert Lewis, coal merchant, of Stanley Street, Claudelands, brother of deceased, gave evidence of identification. XXfilness explained that Ills brother, who was a single man, was 3G years ol age, and a drover by occupation. He had always enjoyed good health. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
