LIFE IN CHICAGO.
"DEADMAN’S CORNER.” PEOPLE PREPARED FOR SHOOTINGS A resident of Chicago, United States, Writing to a friend in Hamilton, says:—. “Do you get to hear anything about Chicago and the gangsters? If you walked along Cambridge and Ork streets at midnight you would see people walking around with their heads In their hands. The corner is called ‘Dead-man’s Corner.’ In one week there were five killed on that corner and ten more in the vicinity. “Another bad corner is that of Grand Avenue and Morgan Street. As soon as you hear Morgan it makes you -think -of Captain Morgan, the pirate—it makes your blood turn cold. There are a number of ‘deadman’s corners’ in Chicago. One night my uncle and I were -taking a girl friend home; she lives on Taylor and Robey, a desperate district of -coloured people and Italians. On the way we saw three coloured fellows stop short, and one went for his hip pocket, and my uncle told us to duok our heads. If I was frightened I surely was then! “Although Chicago is bad it has its beauty too. Some very beautiful things are being built for the World Fair in i 933.”
