MATAMATA.

TOWN BOARD MEET. GENERAL BUSINESS. The ordinary meeting of the Max mata Town Board was held on Mon day evening, Commissioner J. Buchanan presiding over a full attendance of members. By special order the board decided to reduce the width of a portion of Hetana Street in pursuance of the Beautifying Society’s scheme for the establishment of a rest-room and park/-, ing area. Speed Limits. The Commissioner of Transport advised that the speed limits for heavy traffic laid down by the Motor Lorry Regulations, 1927, on the whole were lower than those proposed by the hoard, and it was the Minister s announced policy not to approve of any local restrictions unless there are special circumstances of dangei or roads requiring protection which necessitate the fixing of local restrictions instead of the motor vehicle regulations being relied on. Members were agreed that there should he uniformity in the by-laws from end to end of New Zealand. It was decided to cancel the previous order for speed limit signs, and procure a sufficiency of boundary signs. Waiheku Drain. The Hungahunga Drainage Board wrote that it would not accept Matamata's offer in regard to upkeep of this drain, and would not accept less than £25 per annum for three years after which period the position to be again reviewed. It was pointed out that the Matamata Board obtained benefit from • the whole system of drainage. The town refuse water was charged with silt and debris, necessitating continual clearance. If the Hungahunga Board had to apply for the setting up of a commission to settle the matter it reserved the right to ask for a much larger sum. Commissioner Black considered the offer was an equitable one. Commissioner Stewart said there \sas no doubt, the town ratepayers were deriving benefit from the use of the drain. It was ultimately decided to offer £25 per annum for three years, provided the Hungahunga Board maintained the drain within its own boundary. power Poles Across Cemetery. The Thames Valley Power Board gave notice of its intention to use its right of way leave over the (Matamata Cemetery. Noting from the plan supplied thatno* poles were to be erected on the cemetery site no objection was raised. The chairman brought forward complaints of cricketers concerning Iho state of the turf on the Domain. The ground was infested with fescue, and at present it was practically impossible to have a decent outfield. An interesting discussion took placa on the matter, and it was decided to topdress an area round the cricket pilch with the idea of assisting other grasses to combat the fescue. If successful the whole domain will ba. treated in the same manner.

Commissioner Buchanan intimated that at the next meeting of the board its future policy in regard to the Town Hall would be discussed-
