MOUNTEDS’ TREK.
WEARY RIDE IN RAIN. THREE HUNDRED IN CAMP. It might have been somewhere in France. Long, weary miles on horseback in pelting rain, -trekking slowly to-wards Ngaruawahia. This was the experience of many members of the AVaikato Alounted Rifles yesterday, who commenced their first day’s camp under extremely adverse weather conditions. Most "of the trainees, who came from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts, brought their own mounts and rode them into camp in some cases long distances.. The success of this year’s camp seemed doubtful until this morning when a burst of sunshine proved a boon to both instructors and trainees, and outdoor work could proceed. There are 300 men of all ranks in camp, including 25 officers. Lieut.Colonel C. R. Spragg is in command with Captain Claohan as adjutant. Training -commenced in earnest this morning with squadron drill while the machine-gunners and signallers also started operations. It is probable manoeuvres will take place before the end of the camp and a visit of inspection is anticipated from Major-General R. Young, General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, and Brigadier H. R. Potter, Commanding Officer of the Northern Command. The usual sports and athletic meeting will be held on Monday or Tuesday. The -camp ends on Thursday week. April - -
