LOCAL AND GENERAL.
An infant travelling in the secondclass on the Union Company's steamer Maunganui died at sea yesterday. The Maunganui was on route from Sydney to Auckland. The S2nd anniversary of the province of Otago was celebrated yesterday, when a large reunion of many early setliers was held. A religious service was also held. The barque City of New York yesterday communicated with Rear-Ad-miral Byrd. Up to noon she had made a run of 70 miles eastward of Otago heads, rough head seas being experienced. It is stated that the power failure in Hamilton early yesterday afternoon was due to an insulator breaking down on an lI.T. line between Ilora flora and Claudclands- Temporary repairs were effected so that power could be restored within an hour. Power was switched off at midnight so that, the 'trouble could be permanently remedied. Two boys, aged 1G and 12, who es-' caped from the Mount Albert Boys’ Probation Home on Saturday, were recaptured at Mercer yesterday morning. They had twopence between them. The boys have admitted to the police breaking and entering during the weekend three shops at Avondale, Point Chevalier and Grey Lynn and attempting to enter another shop. The St. John Ambulance Association holds its annual general meeting on Thursday, 27th., inst., in the ambulance room at the back of the Town Hall and everybody is invited to attend. Members of the ambulance and nursing divisions will give displays in first aid to the injured. There will be presentations of certificates, review of the past year’s work in the Hamilton district and the election of officers for the ensuing year. “The girl, though only 14, was ripe in knowledge, and she tempted you whom 1 consider have had sufficient punishment.” trims Mr Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court at Auckland, in convicting and ordering John Hogg to come up for sentence if called upon for unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under IG. Prisoner was also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. His Honour remarked it was very unusual to grant probation or anyLhing other than gaol for such offences, as it was important for girls to be protected. This was a very unusual case, however.
