SEAGULL CONVICTED. gOTHER MENACE FOR STOCKMEN DIFFICULTIES ENHANCED. (By Telegraph.-*—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, MONDAY. Indubitable proof that the seagull harbours the cattle tick was provided by a gull which was captured on one of the beaches of the d’Urville Island, Sounds country, a few days ago. This bird, which had been noticed to bo behaving in a peculiar manner, was easily caught, and on examination was found to be infested with certain insects. These, on being sent to the Government entomologist, were identified as the cattle tick. As soon as these facts were known Mr Wright, principal Inspector of the stock, Wellington, accompanied by Mr Blair, Inspector of stock, Nelson, and Mr Scott, inspector of stock, Blenheim, paid a visit to the Island. The stook were examined on various proper- - ties but none of the animals was found to be affected with cattle tick. At the same time now that the gull has been proved to be a carrier of the cattle tick, the whole question of control has to be viewed In a fresh light, and owners of stock are being advised accordingly.
