AUSTRALIAN WINE MANUFACTURERS. ACCEPT PRIME MINISTER’S CHALLENGE. WILL CLOSE DOWN WORKS IMMEDIATELY. GRAPES LEFT ON THE GROWERS’ HANDS. (United Press Association. —'Electric Telegram.—Copyright.) (Received March 22, 10.35 a.m.) CANBERRA, March 22. The Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. H. Scullin), referring to the threat of the wine manufacturers to close down th,eir works owing to the increased excise duty on fortified spirit for wine,' said he regarded it as pure bluff, adding: ‘‘We are governing this country, not they, and I would remind them we have power to take any necessary action for the protection of growers. The Prime Minister contrnued: ‘‘Those shouting loudest nave been caught with large quantities of fortified wine on hand owing to their having taken undue advantages of the concessions granted up to present.” ADELAIDE, March 22. Following Mr Scullin’s statement, the large wine manufacturers here announced that they would be closing down immediately, rejecting 12,000 to 14,000 tons of grapes, which will be left on the growers’ hands, also causing unemployment among grape pickers.
