PROMOTIONS, TRANSFERS,

THREE NEW INSPECTORS CHANGES AT HAMILTON. WELLINGTON, Frida*. The commissioner of police, Mr'W. B. Mcllveney, announced this afternoon the following promotions and transfers in the police force, to take effect on April 1 : Sub-Inspector P. J. McCarthy, of Auckland to be promoted to the rank of inspector, and transferred to the charge of the Invercargill district, in succession to the late Inspector Fahey. Sub-Inspector J. Lander, of Wellington, is promoted to the rank of irr—spector and is attached to head-quar-ters staff for duty as relieving inspector throughout the Dominion.

Sub-Inspector J. Cummings, of Dunedin, is promoted to the rank of inspector and is placed in charge of the Dunedin Central district, which will be constituted under the co-ordi-nated district system in force in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Sergeant I. H. Mathieson is re-ap-pointed to the grade of senior sergeant and is transferred to Timaru. Sergeant A. E. J. Stark, of Frankton station, is appointed senior sergeant at Napier. Sergeant \V. E. Packer, of Gore, is appointed senior sergeant at that station. Sergeant T. Morlaxty, district clerk at Palmerston North, takes charge of Frankton station. Sergeant C. Harley, district clerk at Timaru, replaces Senior-Sergeant Mathieson at Hamilton. The changes are in consequence of re-arrangement caused by the growth of the chief cities. Dunedin has been brought up to the status of the other three, and the detective offices at Auckland and Wellington are to be in charge of commissioned officers holding the rank of Sub-Inspector.

Inspector McCarthy joined the police force at Auckland in 1899 and served {is constable in Auckland and in the Waikato until 1914 when, at Cambridge, be was promoted to be sergeant. He remained at Cambridge until 1917 and since then has held several appointments. He is a most popular man in and out of the force.
