RAILWAY DEVIATION.

COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE, MAYOR CLARIFIES POSITION. The Mayor (Mr J. R. Fovv) wishes to make it clear that at the Borough Council meeting last Wednesday exception had been -taken to the fact that tiie Minister of Railways had not submitted a scheme providing for an alternative traffic route to relieve the congestion in Victoria Street. The council, lie says, was not concerned so much with -tnc proposed deviation of the railway as with the need for the provision of an alternative traffic route, which was at present blocked by the station yards. The impression might be gained from our report of the discussion -that the council was disappointed only because no action would be taken regarding the railway deviation scheme.
