‘GWYNNELANDS’ MATCHES
INTERESTING CONTESTS. CAMBRIDGE A DEFEAT WAIMAI. Yesterday at “Gwynnelands,” Cambridge, a series of games was played between teams from Waimai, Matangi, Whangarei, and Cambridge. A Te Awamutu team was to have been present, but as two members were incapacitated the team did not compete. The Somers Cup. The polo piayeu during the day was not of a very high standard, bar the Cambridge A team, which defeated the provincial champion team from Wairnai in good style. The game for tiie Somers Cup resulted in an easy win for the holders, Matangi C, 9, against Waimai B, 4. The following were the teams in the Somers Cup match, Matangi C v. Waimai B: Matangi C: T., R. and W. Ranstead and F. ciemett. Waimai B; L. Picoi, K. Henry, j. Broughton, J. Upton. Referee: Air R. G. Blennerhassett.
The -Matangi players were taking no chances of losing the Cup, and fielded a strong team, which outplayed Waimai in the first part of Hie game, and held their own throughout the remainder. The polo was of a fast nature, a lot of close play taking place. During the first half of the game it looked as though Waimai were going down badly; however, they rallied in the closing stages, and added points, but the time was too short for them to have any chance of winning. The game ended in a win for Matangi by 9 points to 4. Whangarei v. Cambridge C. Whangarei: T. Otway, D. Kidd, C. Finiayson, and Sloane. Cambridge C: G. Peake, B. Nolan, K. Buller, and G. Rose. Referee: Mr G. Ranstead. Steady play characterised the opening stages, with Whangarei having slightly tiie better of the game. The pace was not very fast, taken on the average. Peake was the most outstanding player in this game, and hit some fine shots, several of which were unlucky in not being productive of points. The game ended in a wia for Whangarei by 4 goais to i. Roth learns were scratch ones. Cambridge B v. Matangi B. Cambridge B: Garland, Bryant, Vosper, and Speake. Alatangi B: N. Brown, L. Chilly, N. Phillips, B. Townsend- Referee: Air N. Banks. This game was better in every way than the previous two, and both sides made the game willing. Both teams were defending well, while Alatangi’s attack was the stronger. During the greater part of this game the play was really good. Cambridge scored first and held the lead till the fourth, when Matangi secured a goal. From then on Alatangi had the best of the game, and scored twice in the sixth chukka. Cambridge were unlucky not to score in the last spell, a fine shot just missing the posts. The final scores were: Matangi, 3; Cambridge 1. Waimai v. Cambridge A.
Waimai (Provincial Champions) : N. Fisher, M. Garland, J. Butler, R. Blennerhassett. Referee: Mr W. Banks- „ . „ This gcim6 proved 3.n excellent ono t and aroused the most interest; however, the locals carried too many colours for the champions. The play throughout was of a fast _ nature, Cambridge opened the scoring soon after the commencement, and went on to compile 6 points to the champions 2.. Only five chukkas were played in the match. Mixed Match. Matangi and Whangarei v. team to go* to Feiiding (W. Chitty, D. Kay T. Haines, N. McNicoli). Referee: Air W. This game was not fought with as much vim as the previous one, although it was open and proved spectacular at many periods. Neither side was seen to any great advantage during the game, and some of the ponies were not being fully extended at times- The play on the whole was verv even. The final score alter fiva chukkas was 3 —3, a draw.
