TERRIFIC SMASH.
TWO TRAINS WRECKED. CRASH INTO OBSTACLE. ONE ENGINEER KILLED. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel.— Copyright. (Received Marcli 20, 1.45 p.m.) VANCOUVER, March 19. A section of a sewer pipe, weighing two tons, was being dragged across the tracks of the North Western railway, near Chicago, late at .night, when it rolled off the skids and stuck and despite heroic efforts made to avoid a disaster two trains crashed into the obstacle, both locomotives exploding. One engineer, Carl Kutzner, was killed.
When the sewer pipe was found to he immovable there was a scurrying for a red lantern but nothing was found soon enough to warn the train which came speeding out from Chicago. The locomotive was thrown across the double tracks, and within half a-minutc another train from the opposite direction dashed into the wreckage. All the crew except Kutzner jumped to safety when they realised that a smash was inevitable.
