FRICTION AT HOBART.
TURBULENT WATERSIDERS
LOCAL WORKERS MOLESTED.
AN UGLY SITUATION. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel.—Copyright. (Received March 20, 10.20 a.m.) HOBART, March 20. Visiting waterside workers from the Mainland, who have been working in the orchards during the fruit season, attempted to dislodge tlie local wharf workers from loading operations on the motor-ship Port Fremantle and threatened that unless they were put on to replace the men they would Ihrow a stevedore inLo the harbour. They went io the ship and defied tlie chief olliccr’s order to leave. The situation looked ugly, as the Tasmanian gang at work refused to stop until aL last told to do so toy their own union official, and on his advice the invaders left the vessel. They were not allowed to work her, another gang of local men being pul on to finish the loading. Resentment is felt among the waterfront men at the visitors’ efforts to deprive them of employment in a busy season. Feeling runs high over what is described as an attempt at mob rule.
