LAND IN ANTARCTICA.
AMERICA'S CLAIMS. NO NOTE TO GREAT BRITAIN. t'nlled Tress Assn. —Elec. Tel.—Copyright. LONDON, March 18. In regard to the altitude of the United States to Rear-Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic discoveries the British Foreign Office has not received any communication from Washington, nor an indication that any is coming. The position so far as the British Government is concerned is that a Note was sent to Washington several months ago outlining Hie claims of Australia and New Zealand. That Note was merely acknowledged without in anyway being disputed. Therefore it is •considered in London that the claims were recognised. The Washington correspondent of the Times says the objections of the United States and the position reached at the last Imperial Conference were based partly on the assertion that much of the land to which Britain lays claim originally was discovered by Americans, and partly on the ground that Admiral Byrd discovered lands, the existence of which was known at the time of the Imperial Conference. The Washington State Department’s announcement is regarded rather as a reaffirmation of its altitude than as evidence of the intention of the United States to press her claims immediately.
