TAHUNA GRIEVANCE.

EXPENDITURE OF LOAN. SETTLER WANTS INFORMATION. Mr F. W. Page, of Tahuna, attended the Piako County Council •meeting at Tc Aroha, asking for particulars relative to the details of expenditure in the Tahuna special rating area. The loan raised In 1921 was £2OOO on which subsidies of £2 for £1 were received from the Government. lie claimed that the whole amount had not been spent on the Tahuna Road, hut was unable to obtain full particulars from the council. Mr Page supported his case by the production of voluminous correspondence of several years. The chairman stated the accounts had been audited by the Government auditor. Other councillors stated the whole of the loan plus subsidies had been expended. The clerk stated it was difficult to enumerate the details, as in some cases amounts were expended on the Mor-rinsville-Tahuna Road. Cr. Walters corroborated this, as some years ago there was not the same distinction between exact localiiies. Cr. Kennedy contended that Mr Page was justified in endeavouring to obtain the exact expenditure relative lo I lie special rating area. Mr Page said they wished to know why they should have to pay interest on money which may not have been expended under the heading of the special loan. In further stating his case Mr Page slated he was quite certain the whole of Hie money had not been spent on Ihe road for which I lie loan was raised. Cr. Stark said that a portion of the subsidy was Ihe result of a visit to Wellington by Cr. Walters, who was ■informed that a portion would he for ihe benefit on roading for the Mangalenara settlers. Before thanking the council for Its courtesy in hearing his rase Mr Page stated it was his full intention to go as far as he possibly could in the matter.
