MINISTER OF DEFENCE.
RETURN FROM SAMOA. SEVERAL CONFERENCES HELD. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The Hon. J. G. Cobbc, Minister of Defence, returned to New Zealand from Western Samoa by the Tofua, which reached Auckland early this morning. The Minister left, Auckland by the Maui Pomare on February 11 to confer with the Administrator of Western Samoa, Mr S. S. Allen, relative to the situation in the mandated territory. Mr Cobbe was present at several conferences with the Mau with a view to settling existing troubles, and left Apia by the Tofua on March 7. POSITION IN SAMOA. MINISTER HOPEFUL OF FUTURE. SPECIAL POLICE RETURNING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. lion. J. G. Cobbe, asked for a statement in regard to affairs in Samoa, said he could not make any before he saw the Prime Minister, except that matters were satisfactory, and he was hopeful of the future. Asked what was to become of he trainees at Trentham, he smilingly said, “ Those that are up there are coming hack in H.M.S. Dunedin."
