INTEREST ON MORTGAGES.

INCREASE OBJECTED TO. DECISION TO STAND. Mr. F. Lye, M.P., for Waikato, recently made representations to the Government against the proposal to raise the interest on grants advanced on land mortgages and on stock to soldier settlers. Ex-soldier settlers were desirous of having the rate reduced to 5 per cent. Hon. G. W. Forbes, however, has advised Mr. Lye that the Cabinet has carefully considered the matter and has decided that the increase must be adhered to and renewals could not be granted at the old rate. It was proposed to hold a meeting of Mangateparu settlers to protest against the interest rate being maintained at (I per cenL., but in view of the Minister’s emphatic reply, Mr. Lyp docs not think such a meeting would be productive of good results.
