SIR SAMUEL GRIFFITH

Some extraordiug developments are anticipated when the Supreme Court resumes after the vacation, as it is believed Sir Samuel Griffith, who re' cently aocepted the Chief Justiceship, will not ascend the Bench. When he accepted tho position lie qualified it by saying that lie would accept it if no exceptional circumstances arose before the time came for him to ascend the Bench, The press has now scathingly attacked him for his action in appointing Mr Nelson Acting Premier during his absence at the sitting of the Federal Council, and also for act ing ns counsel for the Crown in an important arbitration case, from which the bar engaged were drawing fees of amngnitudo hitherto unknown in the colony. It is understood Sir Samuel Griffith regards these statements as circumstances preventing his acceptance of the Chief Justiceship. January fl.
