ALEXANDRA.
Tub Fi.ooia—The rain which commenced here on Sunday evening last, and continued without intorinission until Tuesday mornins, has caused the greatest rise in the Waipa since the great flood in 1875 j in fact there is hut a few feel in dilfcronce. Again the bridge at Alexandra is carried away. The old structure stood tho tremendous pressure of the flood for nearly all day on Tuesday, the handrails being under water at early moraine, The company's old store that stood out the 1575 flood has also gone with the bridge. Traffic on the Te Rore road is stopped, the Mangapiko bridge being many feet under water. Mr Berry, who has a lease of the old pah, Matakitaki, has lost the whole of his crops. There are also great lasses up-country, between here and Otorohanga, the whole of the cultivations near the river being totally destroyed. Otorolungu township is under water, and no doubt considerable damage has been done there. The flood is now subsiding, but very slowly, Pionio.—Our annual young folks picnic took place on Thursday in the grounds of Messrs Stoke?, l'uniu. In consequenco of the floods the attendance was not nearly «o large aS usual. Tho day was intensely hot but as there was plenty of shade uuder the pines, the youngstars enjoyed themselves amazingly under tho management of Mr Genrgo Miles, who worthily follows the example of his late father in interesting himself in providing amusement for the young folks, Messrs G, and Thos. Finch also represented their family, and added greatly to tho enjoyment. The ladies Jinno conspicuously, Mrs G. Harper and the Misses Stokes Mrs Miles and others attending to tho commissariat department which was more than could possibly have been consumed in a week by the Europeans present, A contingent of our Maori friends, were, however, equal to the occasion, and nothing will ho wasted. Unfortunately the rain came down at 5 ivin., so after a cup of tea under the pines all had to get away as soon as possible, first giving the usual complimentary cheers to tho Messrs Stokes and the principal managers of the picnic.
