KIHIKIHI POLO CLUB SPORTS.

Tim first annual moeting of tho above club took place on their ground at Orakau on the 2nd inst. The weather proved very unfavourable, as heavy showers foil during most of the day; notwithstanding, there was a very fair attendance of visitors, Punctual to time five ponies faced the flag for the Hurdle Race. At the fall Meg Merrilees went to the front at a irerry pace, closely followed by the remainder of tho field ; but the first hurdle thinned the number considerably, At the second last hurdle Meg Merriloas, who up till then had maintained a strong lead, fell, thus leaving Te Ralm t>i come in an easy winner. The Bending Race was th" next evont, for which there were six cumpetitoivi. This was a novelty to innst of the onlookers. The raco was run in heats the final being cleverly won by Bob, The third event was the Cipar and Umbrella Race, for which there were six entries, and resulted in an easy win for Sailor Boy, Tho President's Cup. a handsome cup presented by the popular president (Mr J, Hutchinson), was tho fourth event on the list. This brought out a field nf tour really good-looking ponies, all of which had their admirers. Tho winner turned up in General Mite, tho smallest pony ill the field, who beat his opponent in good style. Tho Polo Ball Raco, another novelty, now eventuated, and was won by (t. C. Wilkie, who drove the ball betweon tho goal posts eighteen sesomls quicker than any of the other competitors, he and his pony Harp Strings being in perfect harmony. Tho sixth raco on the card was tho Ladies Bracelet, which occasioned quite a flatter amongst the fair sex. The conditions of the race were as follows:—Eich man is given a needle and ribbon, with which he has to gallop to a flic, dismount, lead his horse about twenty-five yards to his lady nominator, hand her tho needle and ribbon, which she threads and hands back to him, and then gallop onco round the course. The winner was supplied by Miss Hunt's nomination, Moonbeam. The next nee was the Dressing Raco, which caused a good deal of amusement, and was won by B. Hewett, on Moonbeam, The Tandem Rico was not the least interesting event on the programme, and was a fine display of horsemanship, R, Rig?, with his well-handled team, Meg Medicos and Daphne, passing the post first. This brought a most enjoyable afternoon's sport to a close, The prizes wero then presented by the President's wifo (Mrs Hutchinson). After this a game of polo was indulged in' by all-comers, which caused great amusement. Polo seems to have " cauglit-on," as the boys of twelve might be seen with the veteran of—(?), Amnugst the veterans Messrs Storey and Mnncrief are worthy of special mention, their play being characterised by downright zeal and vigour, The thanks of the club are due to Messrs Storey, who weilded the starter's flag; A, Kay, who performed the duties of judge; H. 'Mnncrief, who, as clerk of the course, left nothing to be desired; R. Brown, who acted as deputy-secretary; H. Howdon, time-keeper; and 0, Ellis, clerk of scales. At present they were unable to go to some of their property without trespassing on the nativo land.—The Clerk stated that it would he necessary to do this through the Government, and Mr Gordon agreed to furnish a sketch plan of the place to be forwarded to Mr Mueller.-Mr Gordon asked that the Board now tike over the whole control of tho main Tauhae road. Originally the agreement was that the Board pay two-thirds and tho Association one-third'of the cost of the works on this road, hut us the road was now as much used by tho public as the Association, ho thought that the Board should now take it over. If they agreed to this, he would do all the fencing on both sides and remove the gate* at present on this road.—Mr Coates moved that the road bo taken over by the Board, and all ga'.es removed with the exception of ono.Seconded by Mr Davis, mid earned,—.Mr Gordon asked to have a gate erected on the No. 1 Bridge near Cox's. -The request was granted on the usual conditions.—He also requested that a number of small roads running between several 50-acre sections which have been purchased by tho Association, about six miles in length, should be closed.—Mr Maclean said there could be no objection to close a considerable portion, and it was decided to tako the necessary steps at once,—Mr Gordon pointed out that the portion of the Eureka Avenue in the Kirikirina District required repairing, and asked that it should be done.-Messrs Coates and Gillett agreed to inspect the road when visiting the proposed deviation, will) power lo act. Henderson wrote stating that ho was sorry that he was unable to collect .Co to sub-'idise the work on the road in North Newcastle between Lots 9!) and Ho, but ho would like the Board to open their drain so as to carry tho water in the proper direction and not allow it to run across as at present. He asked that a few repairs bo made to the first three or four chains which are in a bad stale. It was decided not to undertake any work on this mad until tho subsidy has been paid into the Board. GoMPUiNT.-Mr G. H, Carter wrote complaining that a letter which he had sent to the chairman before last meeting had not been read, He asked that the letter be read.—The clerk said he had not f,ot the letter,—Mr Gillett said that tho letter should have hoan read at the last meeting and it should not rest with either the chairman or the clerk what correspondence should be read. All correspondence should he read, and then it would rest with the Board whether they would deal with it or not.—The Chairman said that it was a mistake on his part that tho letter had not been read.—The mal.tor then dropped. Woodlands Bunion.-It was decided to call for tenders for the recmstructiun of this bridge, Mr T. H. White to prepare the specifications, Whanqamaim.—ln ennnojtion with the ieport of the committee who had inspected tho site on the creek for the erection of a bridge, which was estimated at £2OO, Mr Macloan suggested that some competent person be appointed to inspect this site, and also tho present road, as to which will ultimately bo tho cheaper, The work on the present mad would have to be renewed every two years. There was a hill on the road in connection with this site, but if the bridge was erected at once he would give the Board a good road round the hill, It would bB better to build the bridge on the proposed site even at twice the proposed cost than logo on patching the present road,— It was decided to instruct Mr T. G. Saodes to report as to tho cost of the erection of the bridge and necessary earthworks, IIiVKB Road.—With reference to tho bridges on this road, it was decided to instruct Mr T, G. Sandes to inspect all the bridges on the road and report at next meeting.
