McKinnon's b g Soot Free, aged, by Stsrlingworth—Dainty Ariel mare, 7st 71b (Gall) 0 Major George's ch m Coalscuttle, syrs, by King Cole—Florence, 7st 51b (Guiding) 0 There was some little delay, owing to Merganser and Brigand refusing to join the field. At length, Mr Cutts got them fairly in line, and seizing upon the right moment, lowered the flag to a beautiful start. St. Hippo at once dashed to the front, followed by The Workman, with Pinfire next, after whom were Scot Free and Merganser, and Coalscuttle last. The Workman raced up to St. Hippo as they swept past the six furlongs post, Pinfire being still third, with Merganser next. Gallagher took a pull out at St. Hippo as they raced into the cutt'tig, and this allowed The Workman to take a length lead, which he maintained at the half-mile post, St. Hippo being still second, Merganser, Pinfire. and Scot Free running in a line next. So they raced into the straight, at which point The Workman increased his lead to two lengths from St. Hippo, after whom, at an interval of a length, came Merganser, Scot Free, Pinfire, and Impulse being close handy next, while Coalscuttle was last, full ten lengths in the rear. The Workman continued to carry the field along at a groat pace, and as they travelled round the bottom turn, he was still two lengths in front of St. Hippo, whose nearest follower' was Pinfire, with Merganser close up fourth. Passing the two-mile post, Merganser improved her position and took third place, a length behind St. Hippo, while The Workman was still bowling along in front in great style ; but at this point St. Hippo commenced to quicken his stride, and when the sixfurlong post was reached he dashed past The Workman amid a salvo of cheering, and as Merganser also passed the latter the excitement was intense. The Napier mare seemed to be catching St. Hippo as fchoy raced out of the cutting, but the St. Leger colt still held a length's advantage at the half-mile post, while Pinfire, who was running third, here began to hold out signals of distress, and, falling back beaten, Impulse took his place. As the top stretch was entered upon, St. Hippo was still going in great style, and as Donovan could be seen getting unsteady on Merganser, " St. Hippo wins !" resounded all over the stand. So it proved, for dashing round the home turn with a beautiful free stride the favourite never afterwards gave anything a chance, romping home the easiest of winners by two lengths in front ot Brigand, who came very fast in the last fity ynrds, and passing Merganser twenty yards from the post, secured second honours. Imimlse was fourth, Coalscuttle fifth, The Workman sixth, Pinfire seventh, and Scot Free last. Time. 3m. 30is. Dividends : Inside, £2 17s ; outside, £2 ss.
