VILLAGE SETTLEMENTS

BT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.—COPYRIGHT). Melbourne, December 7, During a debate in the Legislative Council on the Village Settlements Bill. Lieut, Colonel Sir F. T. Sa-good eulogised the Village Settlement system in New Zealand, which he said did infinite credit to the Colony. The Homestead System was not equally as successful, as the holdings were too large. He denounced the proposal contained in the Victorian Bill for the purchase of private lands as it would open the way to bribery or gross corruption. This clause was subsequently rejected by a largo majority.
