WAIKATO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of the members of the Waikatr) Horticultural Society was held in The Waikato Times Buildings at 11 a.m. yesterday. There were present. Messrs L. O'Neill (President), R. VV. Dyer (hon sec)., George Elgec-.imbe, A. Swarbrick, G. W. S*re., .T. W. Sontsr, W. A. Graham, R. F. Siindns and R. J. Gwvnne. Report and Balanob-sheet,—The report and bihncesheet for the past year was read as follows :—The only circumstance of special interest t> the Society during th» past year has bien the agitation which has been raised for cimpulsorv legislation wich regard to the Codlin Moth pest. Shortly before last session of Pnrliament a meeting of friiit-prnwers was held under the auspices of the Society, when resolutions were passed affirming the necessity of compulsory lesMiUinn, and appointing Mr Geo. Edgecumbe as delegate to attend a conference of duit-growers in Auckland. A Bill was also drafted on the lines suggested at the meeting. Mr Edgecumbe duly attended the Conference, at which the principle of cmoulsorv legislation was again affirmed. The upshot of the agitation was that a Bill was introduced into the H kiss by the Government, providing for compulsory legislation. The measure w « carried as far as its second reading and was dropped with a number of otlnr Bit's at the close »l the session. A copy of the Bill is presented herewith and it w. uld be well if this meeting gave some expression of opinion on the matter before separating. Concerning the last show, held in Camhtidge, the bhow Commilte*. submit a balance-sheet, show in" a credit balance of £9 9s lid, which must be ace mr.tad very 3 .ti-'actory considering the wet weather on the Show Day. In addition to the amounts, as shown in the balance sheet paid as prizes, articles t>) the value of £32 IS* 9.1 were distributed as prizes. An attrmpt was m»de to extend the limit? of the show as regards gram, roots, and other farm producp, and to nttich more importance to these elates. Despite the comparatively short notice which we were able to give of these addition* to the usual lUt, great interest was tiken m the ma'tT. A great feature was Mrs and Mi-s Thornton's handsome prxes for bread classes and Mrs F. R. Elli<' prize for the champion collection of apples. As U'na , . the fruit, despite the had season, was the feature of the Rhow. The committee beg to tender their thanks for the hearty support and assistance a (lorded them, and especially to the donors of the numorous handsome prizes._ In reference to the next show, the committee would respectfully urge upon all members the importance of exhibiting in all classes in which they may have anv chance whatever. Menibeis hung back on the last occasion, and some of the classes were not so fairly represented as they should have been. The balance-sheet presented was as follows :—Receipts : Taken at doors. £10 16s 0d ; donations towards prizes, £3111s ; membprs' subscriptions, entrance fees and donations £29 17s ; total, £81 4i Gd. Expenditure : Prizes paid, £43 6s ; judges' expenses, £3 17s Gd ; hire of hall, £1 Is : marque, £1 ; printing and advertising. £10 10s 0 I ; band, 10s fld ; sundries, £3 0s Id ; halance in hand, £0 9s lid ; total, £81 4s 61. The balance at the hank to the credit of the marque fund was £0 13s Id, which, with the balance of £9 9s lid from the last show added, makes a totil of £1G 3*.— The report and balance-sheet were received and adopted, Officers.—The whole of the officers were re-appainted for the ensuing yar, viz. : President: L. O'Neill, Esq. Vice-Presi-dents : Messrs T. Wells (Cambridge). J. Walton (Tβ Awanvitu) and \V. Dn-(Hamil-ton). Hon. soc. and treasurer : Mr R. \V. Dyer (Hamilton). Next Show.—lt was decided to hold the next show at Te Awamntn on Match 17th. Codlin Moth.—A considerable discussion took place on this pe«t and the Bill introduced bv Mm Government la°t Besaion. —Mr V<. W. Dyer moved that this s >cietv favours the. principle >'f (ViniDulsorv leei<lition as embodied in the. Bill introduced hy the Government list smsion, and hopes that the Government will again bring the Bill forward next session, and endeavour to brim? it into opention. --Seconded by Mr G. Eigßcumbe and carried. A vote of thanks to the officers closed the meeting. The following cahleernin was received from Sydney last night :—" The Governnient will shortly introduce legislation to cope with the codlin moth pest which is ravaging the colony.'
