CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The above committee met on Thursday, at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs R. W. Sargent, J. Hally, E. J. Brooks, J. Webber and T. Wells. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and duly confirmed. Attendance.—The average attendance tor the September quarter was 159'9, that being a percentage of 7t»'l. —The Chairman said the Inspector thought the attendance bad, but it was nearly up to the average throughout the colouy. The Examination. —The .average attendance of passes of those presented was BGI, and the failures 13.9 Inspector Crowe reported the discinline, order and tone of the school Rood. The Chairman said several parents had purposely kept their children away from the examination so that they should not be pushed on too fast. Non-attendance.— The master reported that the undermentioned chilaren living within the two mile radius, had failed to attend school thirty times during the last quarter:—Win. Popple, 20 times; Joseph Sfewart, 27 times. The excuses given were, in the former case, " ill health "; and in the latter, "wanted to mind twins." The question of giving prizes to the children who attended the most times was mooted, but mailing was done in the matter, several of the committee thinking the parents deserved punishing instead of the children being rewarded, as they were undoubtedly more to blame than their offspring. Cleaning—The chairman and Mr Brooks had inspected the school and found the cleaning was not satisfactory, but that had since been remedied. Board ok Education.—The committee decided to vote for Mr McGrowan at the forthcoming election for a member of the Board of Education to be held :>n Monday next, the 11th instant. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—C. Crouch, 18s; S. Gerrisb, 13s; T. Wells, 14s 9i; J. S. Bond, (is 9d ; Wilkinson and Co., lis 9d. This closed the business.
