THE CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING. [ur TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION']. Christchcrch, Tuesday. The weather was dull, though fine, for the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting. The attendance was the largest oil record—over 8000 spectators being present when the Cup was ran. His Excellency the Governor and suite arrived before the Hurdle Rice, and wera i'9ceivec.l by the stewards of the club. The course was in good order, and the racing all through w.n interesting. For the Cup Race Crackshot was made a better favourite than Launceston. The race was really a grand one, the large field presenting a pretty sight passing the stand. St. Hippo, the Auckland representative, kept in a good position throughout, and won very comfortably. Westmere got uway very badly in the Welcome Stakes, and ran a crreafc colt.
In the Hurdle Race T. Slieelian had his collarbone broken through Erin-go-Bragh falling. Mr Powell succeeded in sending the fields away very evenly. The sum of £13,420 passed through the totahsator. or £000 more than on the first day -if last year's meeting. St. Hippo is a strong favourite for the Derby, to be run to-morrow. The weather promises fine. The following are the results of to-day's

Settling down, Awarua Rose and St. Hinpo were the first to allow in front, with Lauceston, Vogengang-, and Rosefeldt leading the others. Passing the stand. Awarua Rosa was just clear of St. Hippo, at whose heels Launceston ran. This order was maintained until Cutts' was reached, when St. Hippo went to the front, with Awarua Rose and Launceston as his nearest attendants, Flinders and Merry England following in the order in which they are named. St. Hippo was still in front as the field ran round the top turn, and though Awarua Rose was second, he was being ridden to keep him in his place, while I Rosefeldt made way for Dilemma, but Launceston and Crackshot were occupying zood positions. St. Hippo was first into the straight, where Awarua Rose fell back beatsn, and Dilemma went on second, wi'.h Crackshot, on the outside, and Launceston at the head of the others, of whom Merrie England, Cynisca, and Boulanger were the most prominent. By the time the distance was reached, Merrie England and Cynisca were in difficulties, and Crackshot was beaten in the next hundred yards. St. Hippo maintaining his lead to the finish, won by a length and a-ha!f from Dilemma, with Boulanger, who came very fast in the last 150 yards, a similar distance away third, a neck in front of Launceston ; Crackshot fifth, Rosefeldt sixth, Cynisca seventh, Merrie England eighth, Morion and Flinders pulling up last.
