REGATTA AT NGARUAWAHIA.
The first regntt'i under the auspices of the newly-formed Ngaruawahia Rowing Club was held on the Waipa river yesterday, and was in every way a great success, the public taking a great interest in all the events decided, and this meeting should be the forerunner of many more. There was a good attendance of the public, and all parts of Waikato were represented. The p.s. Freetrader, under Cant. James Gall, carried a large " csrgo " of human freight from Hamilton. The weather rather interfered with the arrangements, as shortly after starting a drizxling rain set in, which kept on more or less during the whole day. The following are the results of the various events :—
Pair Oar Championship, of Ngaruawaliia. Instance, 1J miles.—lst heat: Pirates 1 ; Newchums, 2. Second heat: Colonials, 1; Rondas, 2. Final: Colonials, 1; Ronda, 2. The crew of the winning boat was composed of Dunstan 1, Marshall 2, Douglas 3, Hammond stroke, Bayly coxswain.
Maori Wahines Canoe Race.—Only two canoes Btarted for this event, which was won easily bj Skylark. Maori Mens' Canoe Race.—Scout 1, Three started.
Pair-Oar, for Mr Paterson's trophy, between Nor. 1 and 2 crews of Club.—No. 1 craw, Cogan, Hotchin, C. Starr, Simmelhag and Ellis (cox.), 1; No. 2 crew, 2. These were the only events which were decided when our representative left. During the afternoon a couple of performing bears were exhibited, much to the amusement of those present.
A very successful promenade concert and and dauce was held in the evening in aid of the funds of the Ngaruawahia Cricket Club.
