RAGLAN.
Accidents.—There has been quite a run of accidents here during the last few months, and the most of them have occurred from young men being thrown from horseback. The last that happened was to Mr Markham, the report of which you have already published. Dr. Brewis, of Hamilton, was as once telegraphed for, and he arrived during the night. The unfortunate young man was conveyed to Hamilton next morning, and from information received we are glad to hear that he is progressing favourably under the careful treatment of Dr. Brewis. Dr. Brewis' services are in great request here, he having made three trips during the last fortnight. Appointments.—Mr Bay, Postmaster, has been appointed Registrar of births, deaths and marriages, for the Raglan District. Constable Ryan, of Wellington has been appointed constable in charge of the district, and will shortly take up his duties here. Constable Bulford, who for so many years past, has occupied that position, is retiring from the service. Constable Cavanagh being temporarily in charge here, and Rawiriri, Native Policeman retires.
Trading Vessels.—The s.s. Glenelg, Capt. Austin, arrived here, on Thursday morning, from Onehunga, bringing, in addition to a general cargo, another large consignment of building timber, and other house requisites, and she has still a large quantity to bring. The cutter, Rose, Capt. Liddell, now trading betwixt here and Aotea got away over the bar for the latter port early on Sunday morning last, having gone for the purpose of bringing round a cargo of flax for Messrs Langley Bros. Mail Contracts.—Mr Sutton's tender for the mail service betwixt Hamilton and Raglan has been accepted and will commence with the new year. Preparations have already been made for carrying on the service, several new coaches having been built for the purpose. The mail service to Kawhia is in future to be carried via Raglan, a native, Ngaruhe being the successful tenderer for the same.
Buildings.—Mr T. H. White, architect, has been in Raglan lately preparing plans etc. for additions and improvements to the Harbour View Hotel, which Messrs Langley have purchased. Tenders for erection of same will be at once called for. It would seem at any rate that during the next few months building operations are to be very brisk here, houses are going up on every hand. Mr Geo. Moon, who has just given over the hotel which he has carried on for so many years, has commenced the erection of a house for his family on a fine allotment of ground purchased from Mr Chamberlain. Four or five other houses are in course of erection and several more are to be built shortly. Not a house is to be got in the township although there are enquiries for the same. Public Hall.—The provisional committee have called a public meeting to be held here next Saturday afternoon (November 5th), for consideration of their report. Several sites have been offered for the purpose, and other information will be placed before the meeting as to the formation of the company, cost of building etc.
