THE SHOP AND SHOP ASSISANTS ACT, 1892.
Thb public meeting convened by Hia Worship the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr Isaac Coates, in response to a requisition signed by the business people of Hamilton, Huntly, and Ngaruawahia, was largely attended last evening, and Mr Coates occupied the chair. Amongst those present we noticed Messrs G. Manning, J. Bettley, J. T. Home, W. Taylor, T. Slade, T. W. Maunder, E. Jones, A. O. Kelly, G. Parr, T. Cassidy, T. G. Sandes, A. Scott, R. Parr, N. R. Cox. B. Browne, P. Munro, Jno. Parr, J. 11. Harker, H. M. Salmon, T. Qualtrough, C. J. W. Barton, R. F. Sandea, T. W. Simpson, W. Bayly, R. James, W. Dey, J. R. E. Hatrick, E. Fitzpatrick, T. W. Davies, W. Hutt. Mr Jno. Parr moved that the half-holiday be held upon Saturday for the next three mr.nths.
This was seconded by Mr Davies. As an amendment Mr Bettley moved that the holiday be upon Wednesday. Seconded by Mr Cassidy. There voted for the amendment, o ; and against, 25; and it was declared lost. For the motion there voted: for, 2G ; and against, 1. The half-holiday will therefore be held on Saturday, to commence on the 19t.h inst. Mr Fitzpatrick moved that a deputation, consisting of Messrs J. Parr, T. G. Sandes. W. A. Graham, I. Coates and the mover, confer with the Cambridge people with a view of getting them to observe Saturday aftertron as the half-holiday, the Mayor of Hamilton to confer with the Mayor of Cambridge with a view of calling a meeting. Seconded by Mr Parr and carried unauimously. Mr Scott moved that employers of labour be asked to pay wages on Friday, and that the public be asked to give all the support possible. Seconded by Mr H. M. Salmon and carried unanimously. The following resolution was then carried:—"That Saturday be observed notwithstanding the fact that a pubiic holiday may occur during tho week. Mr Fitzpatrick moved that in the opinion of this meeting the half-holiday ought to be compulsory, leaving theday to be fixed by the bcal body, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Minister of Labour and Mr Lake. M.H.R., for Waikato, Seconded by MrT. G. Sandes and cirried. Proposed by Mr Parr and seconded by Mr Davies that this meeting request the agent of the Press Association in Auckland to send the resolutions passed to the various papers in New Zealand. Carried. The following agreement was drawn up, and will be presented to the various employers ot labour for signature : —We, the undersigned tradesmen and employers of labour, undertake to observe Saturday afternoon, commencing on Saturday, November 19th, as the general half-huliday to be observed under " The Shop and Shop Assistants' Act, 1892," and the public are requested to assist the movement by every means in their power. A vote of thanks to tho chair concluded the meeting.
